Term Life Insurance in El Paso
Term life buys a set amount of coverage for a fixed number of years, commonly 10 to 30, and pays the beneficiaries you choose if you pass away before that period ends. We size the length and amount to the debts you need protected, then show which riders justify their cost.

What Term Life Is Built From
A term policy has only a few working parts: the face amount, the length of the level-premium period, the rate class you qualify for, and any riders attached to the contract. There is no cash value inside it. That is why it costs far less than whole life for the same coverage, and why it is the right tool when the need has an end date.
Most clients we talk with need coverage for a specific stretch: until the mortgage is paid, until the youngest finishes school, or until retirement savings can carry a spouse. We size the policy to that stretch instead of guessing. If you later want lifelong coverage, a conversion privilege can move part of the policy into a permanent plan, so the choice you make now is not a dead end.
What Goes Into Setting Up Your Term Policy
A coverage amount based on your figures
We total your mortgage balance, other debts, the years of income your family would need and costs still ahead, such as tuition. You end up with a coverage amount whose math you can follow, instead of a round figure taken from a table.
A term that ends when the need does
Terms of 10, 15, 20, 25 and 30 years carry very different prices. We set the term to finish when your biggest obligation does, so you are not paying for years you have no use for.
Checking the conversion terms
Every carrier decides its own conversion window and which permanent policies you can switch into. We go through those terms together, since a broad conversion clause becomes valuable if your health declines.
Comparing riders
Carriers sell add-ons such as one that keeps the policy active without premiums during a disability, one that pays part of the benefit early after a terminal diagnosis, coverage for your children, and a refund of premiums if you outlive the term. We explain what each does and how much it adds to the premium, and we tell you when one is not worth buying for you.
Deciding who gets the money
We work through primary and backup beneficiaries, and explain why naming a minor child directly can tie up the money until a court picks someone to handle it. That part of the application needs the same attention as the coverage amount.
When Term Life Makes Sense
You have a new mortgage
A 30-year loan is a set debt that ends on a known date. A level term of the same length covers the balance without the cost of permanent insurance you might not need. A related option is on our mortgage protection insurance page.
Others rely on your income
When a spouse or children would have trouble paying rent, groceries and bills without your earnings, term life stands in for that income during the years it counts most.
All your coverage is through your job
Group life typically stops when the job ends and is often limited to one or two times your salary. An individual term policy stays yours no matter where you work.
You need the largest benefit your budget allows
Term has no cash value, so it delivers the biggest coverage amount for the least money. When the budget is tight and the need is big, it is usually the first place to look.
The Steps to Term Coverage
- 1
A phone call about your situation
On that first call we cover your income, your debts, the people who count on you, your health history and any tobacco use. From those answers we can estimate the rate class you will likely get and a sensible coverage amount.
- 2
Quotes next to each other
We weigh carriers on premium, conversion terms and which riders they offer, not just on price. You can see a 20-year term next to a 30-year term for the same coverage amount.
- 3
Applying and underwriting
Depending on your age and the amount you apply for, the carrier may approve you through accelerated underwriting without an exam, or send a paramedical examiner for a short visit to take vitals and lab samples. Underwriters also check pharmacy records and your Medical Information Bureau file. When your answers line up with those records, the review goes faster and the policy holds up.
- 4
Going over the policy you receive
Once the policy is issued, we confirm the rate class you received, the beneficiaries on file and the deadline for conversion, so you understand exactly what you bought.
What Sets the Cost of Term Life
A term premium comes down to risk and time. The more years the carrier is responsible and the likelier a claim is in those years, the higher the price. We quote with each of these in mind, so the figure you get matches your actual situation.
- How old you are when you apply
- The base rate goes up with each year of delay, and your premium is set at your age on the application. Applying sooner locks a lower rate for the full level period.
- Your health and rate class
- Carriers place applicants in classes such as preferred plus, preferred, standard and table ratings. Your blood pressure, cholesterol, build, family history and medications all decide which class you get.
- Tobacco and nicotine
- People who smoke, vape, chew or use nicotine replacement usually pay several times the non-tobacco rate. Some carriers are more lenient than others about an occasional cigar.
- Length of term and coverage amount
- Each year of a 30-year term costs more than a year of a 10-year term, since it reaches into older, higher-risk ages. A bigger coverage amount raises the premium, though the price per thousand often drops.
- Riders on the policy
- A return of premium rider can add a lot to the price, while a child rider adds fairly little. Every rider has its own separate charge.
Common Questions About Term Life
Something not covered here? (915) 285-4009
What happens when my term runs out and I'm still alive?
The level-premium period ends, and the coverage lapses unless you do something. Many policies allow yearly renewal with no new exam, but the premium jumps every year and climbs quickly. If you still need coverage, converting before the deadline or qualifying for a new policy while healthy is usually cheaper.
Can my term policy become whole life down the road?
Many term policies carry a conversion privilege, letting you move to a permanent policy without new medical underwriting. How long the window lasts and which policies qualify differ by carrier, so we look before you apply. Those permanent choices are explained on our whole life insurance and universal life insurance pages.
I have SGLI and I'm stationed at Fort Bliss. Is that enough?
SGLI is good coverage, but it stops after you leave the service unless you convert it to VGLI, which gets more expensive with age. A private term policy bought while you are young and healthy can stay with you during and after your service. We can compare them with you by phone.
Will term life pay out during the first two years?
Yes, if the cause of death is covered and the application was truthful. In the first two years, called the contestability period, the carrier may examine the application when a claim comes in. Complete, honest answers keep your beneficiary protected.
Does a return of premium rider pay off?
It gives back the premiums you paid if you live past the term, but it often costs a great deal more than a standard policy. Some clients like the built-in savings. Many come out ahead buying plain term and investing what they save, and we will show you the numbers both ways.
