Retirement Income Planning in El Paso

Savings only help in retirement if they turn into a paycheck. We show you how fixed annuities, income riders and cash value life insurance each convert a lump sum into monthly income, what each one costs you in flexibility, and which fits the gap you actually have.

Turning a balance into a paycheck

Retirement income planning starts with one number: what you spend each month minus what Social Security and any pension already pay. That difference is the gap your savings have to cover, for as long as you live. We build the plan around that figure, not around a product.

Each tool for filling the gap is built differently. A fixed annuity credits a declared rate and can pay a set amount for life. A fixed indexed annuity ties its credits to a market index with a floor of zero, so you give up some upside in exchange for no market losses. An income rider adds a lifetime withdrawal benefit for an annual fee. A whole life or universal life policy that has built up cash value lets you take tax-advantaged loans against it, and the coverage still leaves money to a beneficiary.

None of these is best in general. The right mix depends on how much access you need to your money, how long you expect to draw on it, and whether leaving something behind matters to you.

What the planning covers

  1. 01

    An income source inventory

We list every check you will receive: Social Security for you and a spouse, pensions, rental income, required minimum distributions. Each one gets a start date and a monthly amount.

  2. 02

    Annuity comparisons side by side

We lay out fixed and fixed indexed annuities with their surrender periods, crediting methods, caps and participation rates. You see what each contract allows you to withdraw each year without a penalty.

  3. 03

    Income rider math

Rider fees are charged against the account value, often every year. We show the payout percentage at your age, the fee and what the account looks like after ten years of withdrawals.

  4. 04

Cash value as an income source

If you already own whole life or universal life coverage, we review how much can be borrowed, the loan interest rate and how loans reduce what your beneficiary receives. Letting a loan grow too large can lapse a policy, so we check that too.

  5. 05

    Survivor income

When one spouse dies, the smaller Social Security check stops. We test whether the surviving spouse's income still covers the bills, and size coverage or joint-life payouts to close that hole.

Signs it's time to plan your retirement income

  • You retire within ten years

The years just before and after retirement carry the most risk. A market drop then forces withdrawals at low prices, which is hard to recover from.

  • No pension, just a 401(k)

A balance is not an income. Without a plan for how much to draw each year, it is easy to spend too fast or too cautiously.

  • A pension election form is on your desk

Single-life and joint-and-survivor options pay very different amounts, and the choice is usually permanent. Life insurance can sometimes make the higher single-life payout workable for a spouse.

  • CDs keep renewing at whatever rate

Money parked in short-term certificates may fit better in a multi-year fixed annuity that locks a rate for the full term.

  • You worry about outliving your savings

Lifetime income options exist for exactly this. They trade some access to your money for a check that keeps coming.

From the first numbers to a signed contract

  1. 1

    We start with your numbers

Over the phone we go through where your money comes from, what a typical month costs you, what you have saved and any coverage you already hold. Recent statements close at hand make this go faster.

  2. 2

    We calculate the gap

You get the monthly shortfall written out year by year, including when Social Security starts and when required distributions begin.

  3. 3

    We compare the options

We match two or three approaches to your gap and explain the trade-offs in plain terms: liquidity, surrender charges, fees, tax treatment and what passes to heirs.

  4. 4

    You review written illustrations

Every recommendation comes with the carrier's illustration. We point out which columns the carrier is contractually bound to and which rest on assumed rates that may not hold, so you plan on the solid figures.

  5. 5

    Application and delivery

If you decide to move ahead, we handle the paperwork and any transfer from an existing account, then go over the contract with you when it arrives, during the free-look period.

What shapes the cost and the income you receive

The planning conversation itself costs you nothing; agents like us are paid commissions by the insurance carriers whose products you choose, and we tell you that up front. What you pay inside a product comes from fees, rider charges and limits on access. These are the levers that move it.

Your age when income starts
Lifetime payout rates rise with age. Waiting a few years can raise the monthly check noticeably, but you collect it for fewer years.
Surrender period length
Longer surrender periods usually come with better rates or caps. The cost is that pulling out more than the free withdrawal amount early triggers a charge.
Riders you add
Income riders, enhanced death benefits and long-term care features each carry an annual fee. We only include riders that solve a problem in your plan.
Single or joint payout
A joint payout keeps checks going to a surviving spouse, and because the carrier may be paying for a longer stretch, each monthly amount is smaller than a single-life payout. The difference can be large, so we show both.
The rate environment
Fixed annuity rates and indexed caps follow interest rates. A rate locked today stays for the guarantee period whatever happens later.

Retirement income questions we hear often

Will you take over my brokerage account or 401(k) investments?

That isn't what we do. Our tools are insurance-based: fixed annuities, fixed indexed annuities, income riders and cash value life insurance. Any money that belongs in the market stays with the person managing it now, and we build the income plan around it.

Can I lose money in a fixed indexed annuity?

Your credited interest cannot go below zero because of an index drop. You can lose value by surrendering early, since surrender charges apply in the first years, and rider fees reduce the account value over time. We show those numbers before you sign.

I'm a military retiree near Fort Bliss. Does the Survivor Benefit Plan affect this?

It does. SBP reduces your retired pay to provide income for a spouse after you die. Some retirees compare that cost with a life insurance policy, and we can lay the two side by side so you decide with the numbers in front of you.

Should I use my life insurance cash value for income?

Sometimes. Policy loans are generally not taxed while the policy stays in force, but loan interest compounds and every dollar borrowed reduces what your beneficiary gets. We check the loan balance against the cash value so the policy does not lapse.

How long does it take to set up?

Most plans come together over two or three conversations. Once you apply, timing depends on the carrier and on how quickly an existing account releases the transfer.
